Engaged Learning in Sociology
The following are courses that the department offers that count towards the engaged learning core curriculum requirement of the College of Arts & Sciences.
- SOC 3325, Environmental Sociology: In this course students explore the interaction between humans and their environment by taking a sociological perspective to understanding the connection between culture and society and the natural world. The class partners with a community organization that works in areas like environmental and human sustainability, environmental justice, or urban development.
- Open to all majors, no prerequisites
- SOC 4303, Applied Sociology: This course gives students the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of sociology through practical application of sociological methods in the community outside our classroom doors. Students will work on applied research projects at the Center for Community Research and Development (CCRD) alongside Baylor Sociology graduate students on client-driven research projects.
- Prerequisite(s): SOC 1305, 3402 and consent of instructor.
- Applied Sociology (SOC 4303), works like an internship course in that students work alongside graduate students and faculty at the Center for Community Research and Development on client-driven research projects. Please see the course listed under our Engaged Learning courses above.

Baylor Sociology offers exciting opportunities to do research as an undergraduate.
- SOC 4V9R: Undergraduate research undertaken with the supervision of a faculty member. May be taken for a maximum of 6 hours.
- Prerequisites include SOC 1305 and consent of the faculty member.
- Sociology Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF): This competitive program offers motivated sociology majors who are interested in developing research skills the opportunity to engage in faculty-mentored research in a collaborative setting. It focuses on students' academic development through hands-on research, professionalization, and departmental engagement.
- Prerequisites: Declared Sociology major; application required
Sociology students may also explore Opportunities on ForagerOne for opportunities that fit them. All Baylor undergraduate students also have the opportunity to gain research funding through an URSA Grant.
Fellowships and Awards are competitive programs and recognitions that offer students the opportunity to gain important skills towards their next steps. They include both research and community focused opportunities. Specific to sociology majors, the department offers SURF and AKD as a competitive opportunities. However,
- Sociology Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) is a competitive research program for sociology majors interested in developing research skills.
- Alpha Kappa Delta is an international sociology honor society.
